Lenovo-Anchored Hybrid Cloud Architecture

Scope

This file covers Lenovo-anchored hybrid cloud architecture -- the connecting layer between the generic hybrid pattern (patterns/hybrid-cloud.md) and Lenovo's infrastructure portfolio (ThinkSystem, ThinkAgile, ThinkAgile MX). Lenovo's hybrid story is materially more Microsoft-aligned than HPE's or Dell's: ThinkAgile MX is Lenovo's Azure Stack HCI offering, TruScale is the consumption-based delivery model, and most Lenovo hybrid engagements anchor on a Microsoft-cloud destination. Why This Matters

A Lenovo-anchored hybrid is one of the most clearly Microsoft-aligned hybrid postures available from any major server vendor. ThinkAgile MX (Azure Stack HCI on Lenovo hardware), Azure Arc enrollment of ThinkSystem servers, ExpressRoute as the private-connectivity layer, and Azure Site Recovery as the DR target compose into a coherent Microsoft-on-Lenovo story that is more tightly integrated than equivalent offerings at HPE or Dell. The hybrid pattern should call this out: customers anchored on Lenovo are typically Microsoft-cloud-aligned by default, and the hybrid story is mostly about getting the Microsoft-side governance plane right, with the Lenovo-side decisions composing under it.

The TruScale-vs-traditional-purchase decision is similar to the GreenLake-vs-traditional decision at HPE. TruScale is consumption-based, Lenovo-managed, and targets the same OpEx-preference customer segment. The decision drivers are identical: commercial preference (OpEx vs CapEx), operational preference (Lenovo-managed vs self-managed), commitment-term tolerance. The architecture decisions downstream of TruScale are the same as for traditional purchase (the hybrid integrations, the DR direction, the identity bridging) -- TruScale is a delivery and commercial model, not a technical-architecture variant.

XClarity One's cloud-management transition matters because it parallels the Cisco UCS-Manager-to-Intersight transition. Customers with existing XClarity Administrator footprints need a migration path to XClarity One, and new deployments should anchor on XClarity One. The hybrid pattern should treat XClarity One as the strategic management plane and provide guidance on the migration as a prerequisite.

The Lenovo-Veeam partnership is one of the strongest backup-vendor partnerships in the industry and is the default backup answer in most Lenovo engagements. The pattern should call out Veeam specifically rather than treating backup-vendor selection as a pure third-party decision -- in a Lenovo-anchored hybrid, choosing a backup vendor other than Veeam is a deliberate decision that should be justified.

Common Decisions (ADR Triggers)

ADR: Microsoft Hybrid Anchor

Options: - ThinkAgile MX (Azure Stack HCI on Lenovo) -- HCI cluster, Microsoft-managed cloud-style stack, Lenovo-managed hardware, deep Azure Arc integration. Strongest Lenovo hybrid play. - ThinkSystem with Azure Arc only (no Azure Stack HCI) -- Azure governance over generic Lenovo hardware without the HCI commitment. Lighter integration; appropriate when the operational stack is not Microsoft-stack. - TruScale-delivered ThinkAgile MX -- consumption-based delivery of the Azure Stack HCI story. Adds Lenovo-managed hardware operations to the Microsoft-managed stack.

ADR: Management Plane

Options: - XClarity One (cloud-managed) -- strategic direction, cloud-managed, integrates with Azure Arc / vCenter / Intersight in mixed environments. - XClarity Administrator (on-prem, legacy) -- per-domain, on-prem-only, no cloud federation. Acceptable for existing footprints not yet migrated.

ADR: Backup Vendor

Options: - Veeam (canonical Lenovo partner) -- deep partnership, M365 + on-prem coverage, unified vendor relationship. Default for Lenovo-anchored hybrids. - Azure-native (Azure Backup, Azure Site Recovery) -- Microsoft-aligned, simplest for the Microsoft-anchored variant. Backup coverage is narrower than Veeam. - Vendor-neutral (Commvault / Rubrik / Cohesity) -- broader coverage, more procurement complexity.
